4 Practical Time Management Tips to Stay on Track
You’ve set your SMART Goal. You’ve built a backplan. You’re ready to move forward.
Now comes the part that trips up a lot of people—not because they’re unmotivated, but because they’re busy. Life is full. Time is limited. And it’s easy for even the best plan to fall behind.
In our Career Development Program (CDP), we don’t expect perfection—we focus on progress. Here are four practical time management tips that will help you stick to your plan, even when your plate is full.
1. Build a Weekly Planning Routine
Set aside 15–30 minutes at the beginning of each week to look ahead. Ask:
-
What step in my backplan do I need to complete this week?
-
When can I realistically get it done?
-
What else is already on my plate?
Even if you’re just using the notes app on your phone, writing it down helps make it real. Block the time now—before the week gets away from you.
Why it works: Weekly planning creates structure. It turns your backplan from a “someday” idea into a specific task for this week.
2. Use Short, Focused Time Blocks
You don’t need hours to make progress. Most career-building tasks can be done in 15–30 minutes:
-
Watch a training video
-
Update one section of your resume
-
Submit a job application
-
Practice one interview question
Short blocks of time are easier to fit into your schedule—and easier to stick with.
Pro tip: Try the “set a timer and start” method. Even 15 minutes of focused effort moves you forward.
3. Check in with Yourself Daily
Each evening or morning, take one minute to reflect:
-
What did I get done today?
-
What’s one thing I want to complete tomorrow?
If you missed something, adjust. Move it to another time this week. Don’t throw out the plan—revise it.
This is where your growth mindset comes in. You’re not failing if you fall behind. You’re learning to manage your time in a way that works for your real life.
4. Stay Accountable
When you share your goal with someone else, you’re more likely to stick with it. Accountability helps you follow through—even when motivation is low.
Ways to stay accountable:
-
Talk through your backplan with your CDP coach
-
Pair up with a peer and check in weekly
-
Keep a journal or checklist to track your steps
Accountability doesn’t have to be complicated. It just needs to remind you: You’re not doing this alone.
You Don’t Have to Be Perfect—Just Consistent
Time management isn’t about doing everything at once. It’s about choosing what matters, making space for it, and keeping your goals in motion.
If you can plan once a week, focus for 30 minutes at a time, reflect daily, and share your goals—you’ll build the habits that lead to results.
You’ve got a SMART Goal. You’ve got a plan. These four tools will help you carry it out—week by week, step by step.
