3 Examples of SMART Goals from Real Career Journeys

Setting goals is one of the most powerful ways to move your career forward—but not all goals are created equal. That’s why in our Career Development Program (CDP), we focus on SMART Goals: goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time‑bound. They turn big dreams into clear, doable steps.

Here are three examples of how people have used SMART Goals to take action and make progress in their careers.

    1. Alicia — First Job in Food Service

Big Dream: Alicia wanted to work in a commercial kitchen but had no formal experience.

    SMART Goal:

“I will earn my ServSafe Food Handler certification by the end of next month so I can apply to five prep cook jobs with local businesses working out of Union Kitchen’s shared kitchen.”

    Why it works:
This goal is clear and realistic. By getting certified, Alicia made herself eligible for kitchen support roles with food businesses working out of Union Kitchen’s manufacturing facility—many of whom hire part-time team members as they grow.

    2. Marcus — Returning to Work After a Break

Big Dream: After taking time off to care for family, Marcus wanted to re-enter the workforce in customer service.

    SMART Goal:

“I will update my resume, create a LinkedIn profile, and by Friday send both to my CDP coach for feedback.

    Why it works:
Marcus gave himself a clear timeline and focused on what was in his control.

    3. Jasmine — From Job to Career

Big Dream: Jasmine was working part-time at the Union Kitchen store and wanted to move into a leadership role.

    SMART Goal:

“Over the next four weeks, I will ask my manager for weekly 15-minute check-ins to learn more about shift operations and take on one new responsibility each week.”

    Why it works:
This goal helped Jasmine build on the job she already had. By showing initiative and learning new responsibilities, she gained the experience and confidence to step into a shift lead role—and began building a long-term path in operations. That experience also made her a strong candidate to support one of the brands in Union Kitchen’s ecosystem and beyond!

    What’s Your SMART Goal?

Your goal might be to get hired, get promoted, or take the first step toward starting your own business. Wherever you are in your journey, start with one SMART Goal. One clear next step.

“I will (specific action) by (date) so I can (next career step).”

SMART Goals help you make the most of what’s in front of you. They keep you focused, make progress easier to track, and give you something to be proud of as you move forward.
