Grants for Food Entrepreneurs in Washington, DC
Last updated: September 2, 2026.
About: Union Kitchen is Washington, DC’s certified shared commercial kitchen where food businesses produce from first batch to full scale — packaged brands, meal delivery, and everything in between.
If you are looking for grants for food entrepreneurs in Washington, DC, start with the live funding boards, then the lenders and programs that stay in the city when an RFA is not posted. Grants open and close. Microloans, CDFI credit, and sales do not wait for a window. You do not have to join a shared kitchen to apply for most of this.
Book a 45-minute tour only if a funder or buyer needs a licensed commercial kitchen address.
Where to look first
Two pages tell you what is actually open.
DSLBD current funding opportunities is the District board for small business grants and notices. Some months it will say check back. That is the board working as designed, not a sign that capital disappeared.
Nourish DC Collaborative is the food-specific hub. Grant rounds post here when they exist. CDFI loans and technical assistance stay available between rounds for processors, meal delivery, packaged brands, incubators, and other food businesses.
Bookmark both. Subscribe to DSLBD updates. Do not treat last year’s award list as this year’s application.
District grants and financing gateways
When a District window is open, it posts on that DSLBD board. Read the live RFA for eligibility, eligible uses, and deadlines. Those details change by cycle. A page that freezes one fiscal year’s dollar amounts will be wrong the next time you search.
District Capitalized is DSLBD’s standing gateway into financing products and coaching, including the DC Kiva Hub. Use it when you need a path to credit, not only when a grant PDF is live.
DSLBD also runs cohort programs that reopen on their own calendar, including Aspire-style programs for returning citizens. Those are training and milestone support. Apply for the cohort that matches you. Do not budget them as an equipment check.
Food-specific loans and grants
Nourish DC was built for the District food system. Partner CDFIs make loans for working capital, equipment, vehicles, and buildout. Grant rounds happen. Closed rounds are not gone forever and they are not still open.
Start at the Nourish DC Collaborative page and ask which lender fits the size and use of funds. Confirm terms with the lender. Do not copy an old press release into your packet.
Microloans food founders already use
Hilltop Microfinance is a Georgetown student-run lender in the DC area. Their own stories include a refrigerator for a food truck and inventory for a caterer. Apply on their site for current size, rate, and documents.
Kiva through the DC Kiva Hub is a crowdfunded loan, usually 0% interest and no collateral. DSLBD helps DC businesses and resident entrepreneurs get campaign-ready. Confirm current ranges and timelines on Kiva and the DC Kiva Hub.
A 0% Kiva loan is still a loan. Plan the repayment the same week you write the campaign.
What applications usually ask for
Most packets want a DC nexus, a use of funds, and some proof you can sell the product. Many want a basic business license or a plan to get one.
Some RFAs ask for a commercial production address. Many early loans and programs do not. Apply with the address and license path you have.
Cottage food in Washington, DC is its own license. There is no annual dollar cap. You cook only in the registered home kitchen, stay on DC Health’s product list, and sell under cottage rules. Current rules live on DC Health’s cottage food page.
Packaged food brands and meal delivery that have left cottage file their own DC Health path. The facility gives you a licensed address and the inspection walkthrough. Steps are on Licensing a food business in Washington, DC and Food manufacturer license in a shared kitchen.
Sales is also funding
A farmers market stall, a pop-up, or a standing direct order puts cash in the account this month.
We often see founders pause a product waiting for an RFA that has not posted. Keep selling while you watch the boards.
